San Diego Air and Space Museum

The city of San Diego is home to one of the richest aviation heritages in the country. The city’s love, or “air affair,” for aircrafts in the early 1900’s has grown into the first aero-themed museum to be accredited by the American Association of Museums, the San Diego Air and Space Museum. Whether you’re on vacation, looking for an amusing and educational experience or just have an afternoon free, load up your cheap car rental with friends and family and visit “California’s official Air and Space Museum and Education Center.”

Air and Space Museum History

On February 15, 1963, the San Diego Aerospace Museum opened its doors to the public. The Museum started with a small, yet impressive, gathering of flight related items including items like the Navy’s first seaplane, the Curtiss A-1. The Museum’s collection grew at an incredible rate and additional space was needed.

The Air and Space Museum planned on relocating to the city’s Historic Ford Building. Unfortunately before the move could take place the Electric Building and most of its contents were destroyed by a devastating fire on February 22, 1978. More than 50 aircraft and the Museum’s extensive artifact and archival collections were consumed by the flames in seconds.

The museum board, staff, volunteer corps, and community members worked fast to recreate the fallen museum in the Ford Building. Today the Air and Space Museum is located in the Historic Ford Building in San Diego and houses hundreds of aircraft and flight related artifacts.

Among the variety of fully restored air craft, you can also experience the Kid’s Aviation Action Hangar, Space: A Journey to our Future, the Centennial of Naval Aviation Exhibit and now a 3D and 4D theater playing a variety of movies throughout the day. The Air and Space Museum also houses a Low Speed Wind Tunnel in which companies and students test their products and study aerodynamics.
